and jon karl have been tracking it. let's start with jake. >> reporter: last night aftete their primetime addresses, house speaker john boehner was overheard saying he didn't sign up to go mano a mano with the president of the united states after the president called for congress to compromise. the president spoke sternly to the american people last night blaming house republicans, especially freshmen, for holding up a debt deal. >> the only reason this balanced approach isn't on its way to becoming law right now is because a significant number of republicans in congress are insisting on a different approach. >> reporter: house speaker john boehner responded by saying that the president wants to continue his rampant spending. >> the president often said we need a balanced approach, which in washington means, we spend morerend you pay more. >> reporter: right now there a a two competing bills, to raise the debt ceiling and reduce the deficit. a house one that likely cannot pass the senate and a a nate one that cannot likely pass the house. both raise the debt ceiling, cut more than $1 tril

of florida, claire mccaskill of missouri, jon tester of montana, ben nelson of nebraska, and sherrod brown of ohio. >>> congressman david wu is confirming that he will not seek reelection next year. this comes as a house ethics committee launches an investigation into an encounter with a teenage girl. there's a report that he left a voice mail at his office accusing him of the unwanted advances. >>> time now 5:19. let's go to sal. he's watching everything including the golden gate bridge. >> we're going to start there because there's a little bit of mist and fog on the bridge there. southbound 101 traffic moves very nicely if you're coming througsouthern marin you shouldn't have any problem. morning commute is going to be okay as well, if you are driving to the bay bridge toll plaza or to the san mateo bridge toll plaza. both of them are pretty good. then off you go on the san mateo bridge if you're driving to the peninsula. looks pretty good, we're off to a nice start. if you happen to be driving into the south bay any time soon we do have a pretty nice commute there, let's go to steve.

. i want to bring in our capitol hill correspondent jon karl right now. we'll hear from speaker boehner in just a minute and the speaker has already made it clear he can't sign on to the president's grand compromise that would include some tax revenue increases, but now what he is nonowilling to do, the p plan h called for today, is extend th debt limit beyond about six months. >> reporter: that's right, and this comes, george, as the speaker is increasingly confident that he has the votes to pass his plan in the house and, in fact, they believe that will put pressure on the senate to bring it up, so you are right now at a point where the republicans feel maybe for the first time in a while on this that they haha the upper hand here, that they can get through the plan, their r version of th plan, and it would require the president to come back for another debt ceiling early next year. >> the president clearly hoping that by going to the public he'll be able to put pressure on those rubs, but is there a chance it could backfire and unify those house republicans? >> reporter: you'
